The scientists from Vietnam National Museum of Nature, Barry University, and Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences are described one new species of the cicada genus Sinotympana, subfamily Cicadinae, family Cicadidae, (Hemiptera: Auchenorrhyncha). The name of the species Sinotympana caobangensis is a combination of caobang– for the province where the the type series was collected and –ensis (L. suffix denoting place).
The cicada genus Sinotympana was erected by Lee (2009) for the new species Sinotympana incomparabilis Lee, 2009 from southern China. Sinotympana caobangensis belong to the genus, the specimens collected in Cao Bang Province, Vietnam. In addition, the range of the genus Sinotympana is expanded to include Vietnam.
Measurements (mm). N = 10 males, mean (range). Body length: 36.2 (35.8–36.5), fore wing length: 45.4 (45.1–45.6), fore wing width: 14.0 (13.9–14.2), head width: 9.1 (8.9–9.5), head length: 4.6 (4.5–4.7); pronotum width: 12.8 (12.3–13.0), mesonotum width: 11.0 (10.7–11.4), mesonotum length: 8.8 (8.3–9.1). The descriptions of the species are published in the Journal: Zootaxa 4664 (4): 565–573.
The holotype and nine paratypes are deposited in the Vietnam National Museum of Nature, Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology.
